About Us

Welcome

Haven for Hero’s (H2) is an innovative and vital 501(c)(3) IRS approved nonprofit organization.  H2 helps to provide veterans and their families with affordable housing to overcome homelessness and overwhelming challenges and achieve a high quality of life. To this end, we work with veterans who are experiencing homelessness, as well as others in the community, to develop comprehensive service plans designed to meet the needs of veteran’s finding affordable housing in Virginia and District of Columbia.

Our mission is to eliminate veteran homelessness by providing housing solutions and services that will empower and impact the lives of homeless veterans and their families.

Our primary objective is to help veterans and their families with shelter and supportive services. To realize that vision, the organization has recently completed a comprehensive strategic planning effort that resulted in a comprehensive plan for the acquisition of homes in the community to house homeless veterans and their families in need of housing.

Individual empowerment and self-determination have always been strong components of the organization. Founded in 2018 by Barzel and Brenda McKinney, (retired army veterans), the organization was conceived and organized to address the lack of housing and outreach support to disadvantaged veterans and their families, to counteract failure, and to assist in the successful transition to life in a positive environment. Our mission is accomplished by addressing the critical issues of homelessness, housing, and personal responsibility through reintegration programs and services that exercise high standards of ethics, coupled with best practices in management and accountability. We are dedicated to helping each veteran find affordable housing.

We are Veterans Helping Veterans, organized and operated exclusively to improve the lives of veterans and their families by providing housing and a pathway to home ownership for homeless and low-income veterans.

Our goal is to help veterans who, by HUD statistical definitions, are homeless and low or very low income and have reliable income but who cannot qualify to purchase a home and, in most cases, cannot even afford a decent rental home at market rates. In other cases, the home they could afford would not be in a safe neighborhood. Our plan is to acquire reasonable, safe and sustainable housing units either through donations from property owners, direct purchase of distressed properties or from HUD and other agencies. Ideally, these homes will offer access to public transportation, providing opportunities for employment and access to social services and support groups.  After property renovation, there will be an application process and financial suitability testing for people that are interested in participating in the program. We also intend to rely on and partner with other approved 501(c)(3) organizations and government housing and veteran’s agencies to source and screen potential qualifying renters.

Goals and Services

The purpose of this program is to help homeless and hard-working, low-income veterans and their families to obtain housing and ultimately achieve stability, combat community deterioration, reduce crime due to poverty and hopelessness and build stronger neighborhoods in the process. To allow veterans to go from homeless to homeownership.
